Salve! Χαῖρε!
My name is Henry Maravilla, and I’m very excited to be teaching Latin and Ancient Greek! I’m currently a Senior at Yale studying Classics and enrolled in the BA/MA program. During my time at Yale, I was a University Learning Assistant (ULA) for Professors Malina Buturovic in the class Poetry of Illness. This May (2026), I will receive both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree, earned in my four years. As part of my research, I study rhetorical devices in ancient medical texts, and how these devices are received, used, and transformed throughout the history of Western medicine. On my free time I particularly love reading works by Homer, Horace, Euripides, Thucydides, and Herodotus!
Teaching Philosophy
Ancient Greek and Latin Classes in Middle and High School often rely heavily on memorizing grammatical charts and principal parts. While grammatical concepts are a necessary tool to understand the mechanics of both languages, focusing on these skills alone is utterly boring!
So that we are not left agonizing over obscure grammatical charts every class, I have developed other ways to teach these skills. Most importantly, we cover grammatical concepts in the context of texts written in the language. After all, while grammar can be described in charts, languages don’t exist in a vacuum. We’ll read fun (and often funny) passages about magic and monsters to learn all about these grammatical concepts! I will also teach you some linguistic concepts that will help you gain a better understanding not only of Latin and Ancient Greek, but of their descendant and sister languages. We will even learn about Proto-Indo-European (PIE), and it’s relationship to Latin and Ancient Greek!
